Escaping the Mall: What to Do When You Want to Avoid the Holiday Hustle and Bustle

Let's set the scene. It's a Saturday in December. You've just made another loop around the mall parking lot -- your fifth trip around so far. Behind you, a car honks because you paused for a fraction of a second in your search for a space. It isn't even as if you're hovering around the spots closest to the doors. By now you'd take any spot, any spot at all.

Sound familiar? Unless you live in an ultra-small town, if you've gone holiday shopping on a weekend in December, you've probably found yourself in just that situation, and if you're like many people, you've resigned yourself to the inevitability of another year of battling mall crowds.

There are, however, alternatives to the mall rush during the holiday season. Here are a few:

-- Strip malls: Rather than large, indoor malls that attract the bulk of holiday shoppers, particularly in the cold of December in many regions, strip malls often have a number of interesting specialty stores. From book stores to clothing shops, strip malls have it all, and provide a good alternative to braving the bustling crowds of a larger indoor mall.

-- Internet shopping: Why not spend your weekend shopping from the comfort of your own home? Shopping online is convenient and you can find a wide array of products that you won't find on any local shopping trip. Plus, at the holidays, many retailers even offer free shipping. Even later in December it isn't too late to get your gifts in time for Christmas. The closer the holiday gets, many retailers offer free upgrades to priority or express shipping in order to get your gifts in time.

-- Catalog shopping: In September or October, order loads of catalogs. Many magazines have advertisements for catalogs throughout, particularly in the classifieds section, or head to your favorite internet search engine and type in "Catalogs" or "Free Catalogs". You'll be surprised at how many there actually are. Then come December, spend the weekend perusing the catalogs and do some shopping via mail order.

-- Craft fairs: Particularly in November and December, many churches, schools and other assorted community organizations hold craft fairs. These days, craft fairs aren't always just a venue for garish tissue-box covers. Many of the vendors are talented craftsmen and you can often find things such as framed photography, beautiful beaded jewelry, and ceramics. Plus, you have the knowledge that you're supporting the community while you shop.

These are just a few ideas for places to do your holiday shopping when you aren't in the mood for the hustle and bustle of a mall. Though they may not replace the mall completely, they may allow you a pleasant reprieve from the holiday crowds. Plus, you might find yourself surprised at the wealth of unusual and wonderful gifts you'll find when you turn from the traditional holiday rush.

How to Find the Perfect Gifts for Everyone On Your List

With the holidays just around the corner, many people are wracking their brains, trying to think of the perfect gifts for every person on their list. It can be hard to find gifts that convey the right emotional tone and that the recipient will enjoy. Here, then, are tips to find the perfect gifts for everyone on your list.

Friend, Family or Colleague?

First, write down the name of every person for whom you'd like to (or are obligated to) buy a gift. Next, give each person a rating on a scale of one to five, depending on how close they are to your intimate inner circle. If it helps, draw a series of five concentric circles, with the center circle representing those who know your dreams and aspirations and experience your joys and tribulations as they happen. The outer circle represents those people who may not know the "real" you, such as your boss or a business associate. There may be people on your list, such as your child's teacher, who isn't close to you, but who has made a tremendous difference in your child's life. Even though she may not know you well, you might decide to put her name in the second circle.

The reason for this exercise is to keep things in perspective when choosing gifts. It's all too easy to get swept up in the excitement of shopping, and select an inappropriately intimate gift for someone to whom you're not that close. Rating each person can seem calculating, but it will prevent you from buying lingerie for your pastor's wife!

Practical vs. Whimsical

The next step is deciding which people on your list would enjoy practical gifts, which would appreciate whimsical gifts, and which could go either way. So, put a "P" (for "practical"), a "W" (for "whimsical"), or a "PW" (for "practical or whimsical") next to each name. Women who are practical might enjoy a handbag or a blender, while those who are whimsical would appreciate jewelry and painted glass. Those who straddle the fence might find leather goods appealing, since they're both practical and luxurious.

The man who's whimsical might enjoy any number of personal electronics, such as a gaming system or DVD player. A practical man who's into cars, on the other hand, would appreciate a car alarm or even automotive parts. A man with a foot planted in both camps might enjoy something like a radar detector, a headset, or a telephone.

What is Ethical Shopping?

But you can by shopping in an Ethical way. Put simply, this is buying things that are made ethically by companies that act ethically. Buying ethically means buying a brand or from a company which doesn’t exploit labour, animals or the environment. The way in which you can act as an 'ethical consumer' can also take on a different form and that is avoiding products (also known as boycotting) you disapprove of such as battery eggs.

GuideMeGreen acts as an internet guide as opposed to the numerous paper publications, showing you which brands and companies are classed as ethical. For more indepth information see the Good Shopping Guide or the Ethical Consumer magazine.

Why buy ethically?

Everyone needs to go shopping in one way or another. As an ethical consumer, every time you buy something you can make a difference by choosing an ethical product or by buying from an ethical business.

For example, when you buy from a company that doesn’t exploit its workers and provides them with decent working conditions, you are giving the company the funds to continue its ethical behaviour. At the same time, you are no longer buying from a company that exploits its labour with poor pay and often a dangerous working environment. That company then loses business, which may encourage it to change its ways and to look after its workers.

Marks and Spencers the huge retail chain in the UK recently ran an ethical products campaign and said that this was its most successful ever. Many of the big retail companies are now seeing the benefits of offering a range of ethical goods for sale including ethical trainers, ethical shoes and t-shirts.

How do I know it’s ethical?

In general consumers must have confidence that any ethical claims that a brand may make conform to certain standards which are independently accredited. Organisations such as the Good Shopping Guide and Ethical Consumer provide an ethical analysis of everyday brands and the companies behind them. The Ethical Marketing group publishes the Good Shopping Guide, updated annually, grading hundreds of companies according to their policies on 15 ethical issues.

When You're At Your Wit's End: Shopping Survival Tips for Moms

Each month there are special days to celebrate, whether it is someone's birthday, anniversary or a major holiday. Many times the task of choosing gifts becomes Mom's responsibility.

Getting Started

It is good to organize your list if you are shopping for the holidays or several things at one time. Before you go, write suggestions on your list for the gifts you have to buy.

Making choices for individuals is sometimes the hardest part of shopping. Relating to a person's interests or hobbies can be helpful to get started. For someone who likes to use computers and laptops, buy accessories for them, such as Skype extra services. Other popular electronic gifts are Xbox and video games. Children and grandchildren will get many hours of pleasure in these activities.

Traditional gifts are always appreciated. For ladies, jewelry, perfume, and clothing accessories. If the man you know is hard to buy for, consider a gift card, luggage, gym bag or laptop bag. Gifts for the home could be decorative or ornamental, such as a water fountain for the front yard, pewter charger plates, holiday decorations, food gifts, and floral arrangements.

Before You Buy

Before shopping, take time to research products and browse the sale papers to find the best prices. As you make your list, decide on the prices you can afford for each item and stay within your budget so you don't come up short. Many times toys, electronics and computers have a wide range of prices. It might be wise to compare before you shop instead of impulsively buying the first one you see in a store. You may be able to save on one item and spend a little more on another one and stay within your budget.

Baby Shower Gift Buying 101

Many women who get invited to baby showers don’t have children of their own, leaving them with no idea what to buy for the soon-to-be mom. While most go to the store where the mother has registered, some are now thinking outside the box with personalized baby gifts rather than what is listed in the registry. Many shower-goers are now buying theme-related items to give as baby shower gifts, just to give that personalized feel.

If the mother has picked out the name for the baby, pick up a few items and get the baby’s name imprinted on them. An easy idea for a baby gift is buying something essential, then spicing it up with some small accessories. Still not feeling very creative? Well here is a simple list of some of the most popular items to give as baby shower gifts. A gift for mom and dad

The mom-to-be is so concentrated on the baby right now, that she and the father have no time to think about themselves, and the baby isn’t even here yet. Rather than buying a baby gift, get something for mom and dad to use after the baby is born, such as a couple’s massage or a gift certificate for dinner. The baby shower is sure to get them all the essentials for the baby, so why not give them something they can use for themselves. A themed basket

This is the perfect baby gift idea for someone who is on a budget. Just go to the store where the mother has registered and simply buy the sheets or blankets she has asked for. Then go around the store and buy some little toys or must-have baby essentials, such as pacifiers, baby bottles or bibs. These are the items that most likely will be neglected by other guests who buy more expensive gifts. A designer baby bag

If your on a tight budget, you don’t have to splurge to get a designer baby bag. Most mothers will be happy with anything that doesn’t actually look like a baby bag, and looks stylish at the same time. Vera Bradley bags are one of the most popular bags for mothers to use, and they aren’t even baby bags. After buying the bag, you can add a personal touch to it by adding some little baby gifts inside. A baby tub

This is a simple baby gift idea that can let you have some fun while buying it. After purchasing the tub, add all of the essentials the mother will need for the baby during bath time. This can include shampoo, bubbles and some little toys. You can even add some things for mom, because she is unlikely to have much time to herself once the baby arrives. An activity gym

After the baby is born, mom will need something so that the baby can stay occupied in its crib for as long as possible. An activity gym is the perfect idea for this. Look for one that has many colors, lights up, and has toys within the baby’s reach so that it will keep the baby’s interest. A baby monitor

Most first time moms are nervous to leave their baby alone for a second, let alone a whole night. Let mom and dad sleep in peace with a simple baby monitor that will allow them to hear if the baby does wake up. Now that you have your baby shower gift in mind, whether it’s for baby or for mom and dad, get to your nearest registry and have fun shopping! Remember to be creative, and buy a baby gift that mom-to-be will remember you for!

History and Usage of Tin

Tin is a chemical element located in the period table. The symbol for Tin is Sn which is derived from Tin’s Latin name, stannum. The atomic number for Tin is 50. Tin is a soft, malleable metal that resists corrosion well and can be found in a number of alloys.

History:

Tin is one of the earliest known metals, and has been used in the past as a component of bronze. As early as 3,500 BC, Tin was used in bronze implements because if its hardening effect on copper. The mining of Tin is believed to have begun around Classical times, in Cornwall and Devon. With the civilizations of the Mediterranean, a thriving Tin trade was allowed to develop. After 4000 years of Tin mining in Cornwall, the last Cornish Tin Mine was closed in 1998. Although the American Heritage Dictionary speculates that the word Tin was borrowed from a pre-Indo European language, no one is exactly sure where the word Tin originated.

The word Tin is often used improperly in modern times, as people often use it as a generic phrase for any sort of metal that is silver in color and available in thin sheets. Objects like tin foil and tin cans are actually made out of steel or aluminum, though there is a thin layer of tin in cans in an attempt to prevent rusting.

Usage:

Because Tin bonds easily, it has been used to coat lead, zinc and steel in order to prevent corrosion. Containers fashioned from steel plated with Tin are used widely for preserving food, which forms a large part of the metallic tin market. This is why cans are often called ‘Tin cans’, even when created from steel. There is always at least a small amount of tin incorporated into the metal.

Other important tin alloys include bronze, Babbitt metal, die casting alloy, phosphor bronze, pewter, soft solder, bell metal and White metal. Many of the metal pipes found in a pipe organ are created with a tin and lead alloy. Spotted metal, used in the pipes, is created when a 50%/50% alloy cools, and a mottled or spotted effect is created when the lead cools slightly faster than the Tin. The amount of tin present in organ pipes can define the pipe tone, as Tin is one of the most tonally resonant of all metal types.

Glass for windows is made using what is often called the Pilkington process, and entails floating molten hot glass atop molten hot tin, creating what is known as float glass, in order to create a perfectly flat surface. Tin is also commonly used in solders, especially in joining pipes, electric circuits, bearing alloys, glass making, and a wide variety of other applications.

Online Shopping for Clothes? Do Yourself a Big Favor & Read this Before Making a Tragic Purchase!

Online Shopping today? To be more exact - online clothes shopping today? Good idea - you can find clothes shops from all over the world that will deliver to your door step (but wait a minute - is it such a good idea)???

Well - in my opinion, clothes shopping is soooooo hard - I find it the most difficult thing to buy online. You can't feel the fabric, there are often small changes to colour, the sizing is awful (especially if you're talking about international sizing), and you can't see it on a normal person (generally you see it on a milky white, stick figure model - if you are "normal sized", and have asian colouring for instance - you're not going to tell if it's going to suit you).

So... what are you to do? No online shopping for clothes??? No - that's not what I'm saying. By all means you should shop online for clothes - there are some HUGE bargains to be had, and the range of different shops & clothing styles is amazing (especially if you come from a small country like New Zealand).

But - if you are shopping online, find the following in an online shop, or an online trader:

* A well known online shop (generally their sizes, colours etc. are more accurate)

* A well known brand (and I'm not talking about fakes here - the real thing. For example - Levis - you are always going to find the same "size" Levis, no matter where you shop)

* A trusted online shop (do a search on their name - if their sizes/colours don't match up, there is sure to be someone complaining on the internet somewhere...)

* An online shop recommended by other websites or friends (if a website is recommending a shop, generally this says good things, and as for your friends - if you can't trust them....)

* An online shop that gives you unconditional money back guarantees, and offers returns (if that skirt does look awful on you, you can always send it back - (don't get a guarantee for "only if broken" - if you don't like it, you should be able to return it).

* An online shop with a telephone number / complaints department (if there is something wrong, you want to be able to get hold of them).

* Make sure the trader has loads of feedback (good of course) - and don't just look at the feedback. People tend to only put good feedback (because they don't want bad feedback in return) - so (if the auction allows it) check out how many items they've sold as well. If they've sold 10,000 and only have 1000 good feedbacks, you should query this - once again - check out google - do a search on their trader name. If they are really bad, people are sure to talk - even if it's not on the actual auction site itself.

* Make sure the trader has loads of completed sales - if they have 100 sales that aren't completed in the last month - why - ask them in the auction questions BEFORE you bid. Remember it is a lot easier to get a refund from a shop than an online auction seller (generally)So what does this mean about online shopping?

Nothing... by all means - shop online. In fact I encourage online shopping (for all the reasons listed in the first place) - just do it with all of the "rules" in mind. That way - you should get what you're looking for, and not end up with a wardrobe full of "disgusting" clothes.vv

Costume Glow Sticks

Clubbing is not the only way to go when it comes to glow sticks. They are a great item to use during special occasions like Halloween or Mardi Gras, as a costume or an accessory. Parents use them in the house during such occasions to lend an eerie ambience to the surroundings, and children don them when they go trick or treating as a safety tool to light up the way or to be seen.

Parades also use them to add color to their carnival and old world costumes, and for prominence when darkness falls. Fancy dress parties have also seen a lot of glow stick usage. Mothers have sewn them into the lining of costumes to give a colorful effect. You?ll never cease to dazzle whether you?re a fairy, a queen or a pirate of the Caribbean.

You can do more with costume glow sticks, like mold them into bracelets around your wrists. Some wear them as necklaces or belts if they are long enough. They are the most essential part of a glow stick dancer's costume, as the name suggests. They've become a popular prop in the genre of techno and hip-hop music in cities like New York and San Francisco. There are a huge variety of costumes which are custom-lighted. These are widely used on stage or on similar productions. They come in all designs, styles, shapes and sizes.

The selection is quite exceptional and you can avail of them online at various websites. They are easy to purchase, and delivery is quick and efficient. You can buy them wholesale at competitive prices.

Mens Wide Shoes - Your Personal Guide

Shoes are probably one of the hardest items to pick out – there is no shoe size that fits all and two people with the same shoe size can't necessarily invest in the same pair of shoes, so if you're interested in mens wide shoes, here is a guide to picking out the perfect pair.

First of all, it's important that you not only consider the width of the shoe that is necessary for you, but you must also look ahead and determine precisely what activities you plan to engage in with your mens wide shoes. Are you very athletic or do you simply enjoy a game of golf every now and then? Maybe you just want a plain casual pair of mens wide shoes or maybe you man a large boat and need a special pair of shoes that are not only wide but especially designed for boaters! Purchasing your mens wide shoes really is a personal and important experience! And every detail counts – for example, do you want a shoe with velcro?

So as you can tell, even though you've narrowed down your shopping to “mens wide shoes,” the options are still almost overwhelming. Here are some examples of what the specific shoes you could be looking at the shoe store: mens size 14 extra wide athletic shoes, mens 27 extra wide width shoes, mens extra wide velcro shoes, extra large wide mens shoes, mens27s casual shoes extra wide eee 3e, mens extra wide golf shoes, etc! The list goes on and on. From terms like “eee” to “3e,” you will have to get into the loop if you don't want to miss out on the right pair of mens wide shoes. (The “e” refers to the widths of the shoes.)

As you continue looking for mens wide shoes, you may find that there are only a handful of mens 27 extra wide width shoes manufacturers. Mens shoes, extra wide, are already a niche product to an extent, so getting a more specialized kind like mens extra extra wide width mens shoes, may not be a walk in the park! But don't worry, as long as you understand the terminology and what you're looking for, you can use the Internet to help you on your search.

Digital Photagraphy Lens - Do You Know Enough?

In the days of my old Nikon F, I had a few lenses each with a different purpose. I had my favorite 105mm telephoto lens, my 43 to 86mm zoom lens which I often doubled with a doubling ring, and a few more. I couldn't rally afford a macro lens, so with a reverse ring by Vivitar, I was able to attach my telephoto lens of 105mm backwords, thus allowing me to take awesome macro pictures of flowers, close- ups of raindrops on leaves etc..The raindrop shots were so close, that the water acted as a magnifying glass on the leaf. Awesome!

Understanding the true function of a lens is relatively simple. It all has to do with focal length and field of view. Whether your camera be a digital one with a fixed lens, or one that allows you to switch lens, most often you're using a zoom lens. 'Focul length' is better defined as follows;

The 'focul length' simply determines how much of a scene it will capture. A 'normal' focul length will capture a horizontal field of about 45 degrees for example. While a wide angle lens captures a wider field, such as 90 degrees and more. Telephoto lens are great for close-ups because, it captures a much smaller field of view. Actually any background as you focus on your main subject will appear blurry, or out of focus, which makes for a really nice effect.

Most people understand how a zoom lens works. You zoom out to get more of a scene, while you zoom in to get less of a scene. But since the advent of digital cameras, in comparison to our old 35mm cameras, the relationship between focal length and field of view has changed somewhat because the dimension of the sensors in the cameras are now different, and much smaller. Confusing? Sure is!

What this means for you is that unless you're a real photography nut, and really want to know what each of your lens will do , you shouldn't concern yourself with all of this stuff. But let's assume you really need to know for whatever reason.

In the old days of the 35mm with film, If you owned a wide angle lens, you could count on the fact that it would deliver an end result (a photo) almost exactly how you saw it in your camera viewer. But today, using the same lens on a digital camera will give you a complete different result.

For example, I'm holding in my hand my wife's HP digicam with a 7-21mm zoom lens. But because it's a digital, this small lens will give me a result compared to and up to my 105mm telephoto lens, because of the size of the sensor. Still confused? Don't blame you. Bottom line is that most of you have given up on old 35mm cameras, and only use digital anyway. And as is with any camera, just as it was in the 35mm era, you still need to test in many different situations to get any good at it.

For example, I can take a sunset scene and within 5 minutes get a whole bunch of different effects just by using different aperture openings. You don`t need a photography course to be a good photographer. You just need to read up on what all these numbers mean and do, and as you experiment take notes.

Do You Need An Extended Warranty On That Christmas Gift You Just Bought

If you purchase any kind of electronic Christmas gift this year, you are going to be asked if you want to purchase an extended warranty.

To you the consumer, a warranty often gives you some peace of mind and the means to avoid a large repair bill if something goes wrong. This is especially true with big-ticket items such as big screen televisions, appliances and the newer electronic gadgets.

However, do you really need an extended warranty on let's say that digital camera that you just bought as a Christmas gift for your grown son or daughter?

Consumer advocates claim that for the most part, extended warranties are almost always a rip-off. But every year Americans are shelling out more and more for these extended warranties.

The consumer advocates also claim that products rarely ever break within the warranty period, and even if they do, the cost to fix it is usually about the same as what you paid for the extended warranty.

On the other hand, things do break. As products become more and more complicated, there is that old nagging suspicion in your mind that something just might go wrong as soon as you get the purchase home.

Let's face it, if you want the peace of mind, security and convenience that an extended warranty offers then spend the extra money.

If on the other you believe that paying extra for an extended warranty is a rip-off then don't buy it.

Either way you're probably going to be all right.

Now would I purchase an extended warranty on the digital camera that I just bought for my grown son or daughter? If the camera were a high-end camera, say over $500, then I would probably get the warranty. If the digital camera was under $200 dollars than I probably wouldn't. If the camera was between $200 and $500 then I would have to think about it some but I probably wouldn't purchase the extended warranty.

And something to always remember, the stores have a big incentive to push extended warranties. Over $1.6 billion will be spent over the holidays on extended warranties just to add a little peace of mind to the Christmas gifts you just bought.

Choke on a Noise Cancelling Headphone?

Safety is usually a boring term. I know...when you hear the word safety, you want to automatically go somewhere else. But, safety with your noise cancelling headphones can be important and here are some of the issues you'll want to know.

Noise cancelling headphones are great for the music, movie, or game lover who doesn't want other people to have to hear what's being enjoyed. Audiophiles for example, choose noise canceling headphones when they are listening to music in a home theatre setting. People in apartments or college dorms, as another example, may use headphones so they don't bother the neighbors.

When it comes to noise canceling headphones, there are appropriate times to use them and inappropriate times to use them. Noise canceling headphones really do eliminate a lot of background noise, which means you get a crisper, clearer sound (to the sound you want to listen to!) than if you simply used regular headphones. However, be sure not to use your noise canceling headphones when you find yourself in a situation where you need all of your senses to keep you safe and alert. For example, this type of head phone may be appropriate while you're listening in your home theatre or you're flying in an airplane. But it wouldn't be appropriate if you're driving a car, riding a bicycle, or walking down a dark street in the middle of the night. You need to be able to hear in order to stay safe and react appropriately to noises around you.

However, there are times when noise canceling headphones are actually safer than regular head phones! For example, if you are in a place where there is a lot of background noise and you need to or want to hear sound through your headphones. Regular head phones would not properly cancel out the background sound, forcing you to turn up the sound further, potentially causing permanent hearing loss. A good set of noise canceling headphones though, can eliminate background noise so you can hear your own music better.

And, of course, there's the "angry neighbor" who is sick of hearing your music and asking you turn it down! They won't bang on the walls of the apartment anymore!

Other headphones then, are safe in circumstances where you need to hear the background noise and be able to react to it. But they are not safe if you are forced to turn them up too loudly to cancel out the peripheral sounds. Other safety issues with headphones (not just noise cancelling headphones) are wires and cords: be careful that you don't get tangled up in the wires and cords for they could really hurt, or even cause choking! One example might be if you fall asleep with your headphones on." The old adage "safety first" may be boring but it makes good sense. Be sure to put safety first when you are using headphones and use the right ones for the right circumstances.
