What would a front porch be without a porch swing? There are many different styles of such swings that you can have whether you decide to build your own or buy one ready made. A swing can be free standing attached to a single post on each side or you might like the A-frame support style. The perfect swing has an adjustable seat so that it will suit all members of the family. The back adjusts so that you can recline or sit up straight. To build such a swing, you won't need to invest in a lot of expensive tools, as you only need the basics of a hammer or screwdriver, a saw and a tape measure. You will need to buy two types of lumber - treated pine for the frame and armrests and hard wood for the seat and back. You will also need to buy galvanized chain, galvanized coach bolts, 4 inch nails, and wood screws. The plans for each type of swing will provide you withy the dimensions that you need for cutting the wood.

After you complete the end frames, you have to make the seat frame. Then you can make the support for the back of the seat and fit the seat slats in place. If you affix a piece of board to the slats, there will be something for them to rest on while you are attaching them in place. Once you have this completed, then you can create a design in the back of the seat, such as curves on the top, or you can leave it straight across. Once you have all this done, then you can fit the armrests in place. Lastly, thread the chain through the holes in the armrests, through the bottom of the end frames and back up again. The holes for the chain should be bigger than the chain so it can move freely.
